WF x Rippon
We were very fortunate to host the first WF Gathering of 2015 at Rippon, a vineyard + winery located in the beautiful town of Wanaka, NZ. Rippon is a biodynamically run vineyard that produces beautifully crafted, non-interventionalist, wines.
It was an abnormally hot January evening. At 7pm the thermometers were saying 33 degrees—which, come to think of it, might actually might explain the intensity of our thirst. We kicked off our tasting festivities with Rippon's 2011 Osteiner (a riesling-sylvaner hybrid), followed by 2013 Sauvignon Blanc, 2012 Riesling and the 2013 Gewürztraminer. All the wines were refreshingly unique expressions of both their variety and land.
Our night was made all the more special by the attendance of Rippon wine founder, Lois Mills, and vineyard manager (and daughter), Charlie Mills. They generously shared with us the story of their family, land, vines and wine.
Having just finished our meal, the evening was brought to an exciting and unexpected end when the clouds parted and released a sudden downpour of rain (note the ominous clouds in picture 13). Screams, giggles and quick goodbyes ensued; we all headed home full on delicious wine and good times.
Thanks to Sarah Elsom and Kelsey Rufiange we had ourselves a beautiful table decorated with white roses, stems of lavender, kanuka branches and pinecones. We foraged vases, candles and linen napkins from Wastebusters, a local thrift and haberdashery store (a bargain-hunters dream!). All up we spent $15 on decorations.
The outrageously good local fish and chip shop, Boa Boa, supplied us with enough F+C's to sink a small dingy. Boy were we stuffed. Thanks Boa Boa.
